Hi Ev,

It's flue season. Take some vitamin C.

My father-in-law has been quite sick with flu-like symptoms. Laryngitis, cough, sore throat, fever, achiness,(sp?) and over all feeling terrible. He actually came to visit us last week end when he was first coming down with it, couldn't believe that! As soon as he left, we went around and washed everything he had touched and we both washed our hands good. So far we have not come down with it. If people only had enough sense to stay home when they are sick instead of spreading it around. I used to work in a hospital though and they wanted you there even if you were on your death bed. Never mind you might give the patients something, they just didn't want to be short staffed!!

Had a bad cold for the first time in about 6 years the last week in August..miserable! Still coughing from it..just will not go away. Sometimes it takes a good 6-8 weeks to have all symptoms of a nasty cold go away completely. Our youngest son came down for a visit from Philly the first week in September and went back 9/12..He called a week later to thank me for the cold! His only lasted a week and now he is 100%. Yesterday, our oldest son (28) had to go home because of an upset stomach, but today is feeling much better. Nobody else around NE AL that I know is ill. Just shows you that when you are 53, you stay sicker longer than a person of 21 LOL.

Well, since you asked, nephew, schooling in Houston, came down with a bad case of ?food poisoning? that had him in ICU several days last week, and on bed rest and antibiotics all of this. Seems "it" got into his blood and lungs. He's finally well enough to go back to school Monday. Brother and BIL both have allergies/colds?, and son, here in co, has been down with a "tummy ache" the last couple of days. These, I think, are just normal stuff for this time of year, but Lesley, I'd welcome your take on how common it is for food poisoning to have the effect it has had on nephew.

Your nephew is a lucky duck. Food poisoning is only as bad as the germ causing it. E-Coli is the usual culprit, but not always. It is relatively easy for a nasty bacteria to become blood-borne from the gut. Once it gets ahold of the circulatory sytem, obviously it can set up housekeeping anywhere the blood goes. Years ago, it was called "blood poisoning". The body's immune system is overwhelmed with trying to fight the bacteria in so many different places that it eventually crashes if untreated. Folks who lived in the days before ICUs and antibiotics used to be very careful of any break in the skin, even from foot blisters because of "blood poisoning". When the intestines are stressed, they bleed...the bacteria hop on into the blood stream via the intestines and there you have it. This is why you have heard of folks eating contaminated hamburger at a fast food place and dying. Your nephew must have gotten a high load of bacteria from whatever it is he ate. I am glad for him and all of your family that he is much better. God bless.

Nephew's Dad is now in ICU with whatever nephew had, and two of his siblings are sick and on antibiotics. The doctor now says it is contagious by contact. Is it possible for food poisoning to be contagious by contact, or was that a misdiagnosis?

Mary, I don't think it is possible to spread food poisoning amongst folks unless they share the food. Sounds like a horrific flu. I hope they all heal up FAST. Prayers a going up.
