replacing glass on a woodstove

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We have an older Earthstove that needs new glass in the door. (stove isn't ours, comes with the rental we live in). We have been looking into this-ans so far the only place we can find that will cut us the glass is Lehmans.

Apparently they use ceramic glass which has a good track record, againt cracking due to heat...someone tried to replace the glass in the door before we moved here and they had the new glass crack the first time they used it. The guy at Lehmans told us they might have used tempered glass-which is not the right kind to use.

So I am coming tothe experts :) ANyone know about this? And is mailorder going to be the only way to go on this-I am of course thinking of shipping being tricky...we live in MO and Lehmans is a long way from us.

Thanks, Sarah

Sarah,

Lehman's are wonderful. I live in IL and order from them all the time...never have had a problem.

Quick, courteous service and they know what they are talking about.

We had to get the glass replaced on our wood stove. You need pyro- ceramic glass to hold up to the heat. We got ours from a local glass shop. Expensive though about $40 for a little square.

Good luck.

Call around to places which sell wood stoves for prices. It is a special type of glass.

We replaced the glass in our stove several years ago. We got the replacement glass through a stove shop. It has lasted well.

I've replaced the windows in my woodstove door on 2 occasions. Any plate glass supplier should be able to fix you up with pyrex. Thats the same glass the cooking containers are made of. A 5" by 8" piece cost me aboout $38.

Our old Kalamazoo stove has "mica" glass on the front. Not a real glass...a mineral (?) that is like a plastic for coal stoves. Once when the grandchildren were babies we found them poking holes in it one day !! The little darlings !! Found Lehmans very reasonable and fast service in replacing this as no one near else even knew what we were talking about. Give them a try !! Good Luck !!
