FBI denies account of Sears Tower attack plot By Rudolph Bush and Matt O'Connor Tribune staff reporters Published October 2, 2001

Even though the FBI in Chicago on Monday labeled "absolutely false" a news account claiming agents had broken up a terrorist cell that may have plotted an attack on the Sears Tower, workers in the nation's tallest building remained fearful.

Karen Weinberg, who works for a software company on the 11th floor, said the ABC News report stoked fear among already apprehensive workers. "It's creepy. You think about how important it is to actually work here, and you think about quitting," Weinberg said.

Mark Lieb, who works for a law firm, talked about how it was once fun to be in the 110-story office building, until the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York's World Trade Center.

"It used to be exciting to watch airplanes buzz the tower and watch the F-16s fly by during air shows," Lieb said. Now, he said, the sight of nearby planes causes fear.

On Monday, ABC News reported the FBI learned of the potential for a Sears Tower attack while investigating three men in Detroit; a fourth in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and a fifth, Nabil Al-Marabh, in suburban Chicago on Sept. 20.

According to the account, federal agents reportedly seized computer disks and drawings related to the Sears Tower as part of their investigation.

But Thomas J. Kneir, special agent in charge of the Chicago office, said the news account was completely unfounded.

"Absolutely false, absolutely false, underlined," Kneir said. "There's no anything regarding Sears."

Todd Polkes, a spokesman for ABC News, said the organization stands by its account, adding that reporter Brian Ross had learned officials were re-evaluating emergency evacuation plans for the tower.

But FBI spokesman Ross Rice said agents met with management at the Sears Tower on Monday afternoon to discuss building security and preparedness--a meeting that grew out of the Sept. 11 attacks but had nothing to do with five recent arrests in the Midwest.

Tribune staff reporter Todd Lighty contributed to this report.
