Taliban: Bin Laden now free to wage jihad

The Taliban says it has lifted restrictions on Osama bin Laden so he can wage jihad following the air strikes.

He had reportedly previously been barred by the regime from using telephones, fax machines and the internet.

A Taliban spokesman said bin Laden is now free to operate and move around as he chooses.

Abdul Hai Mutmaen said: "With the start of the American attacks, these restrictions are no longer in place.

"Jihad is an obligation on all Muslims of the world. We want this, bin Laden wants this and America will face the unpleasant consequences of their attacks."

The Taliban comments came as a spokesman for bin Laden's terror network, al-Qaida, declared a holy war on the US.

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith issued a defiant statement and thanked the hijackers who carried out the September 11 attacks.
