Engine problems 7.3 ford diesel

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have a 7.3 diesel pick up 250 series with only 65000 miles on it Everything works fine until you let it set for 3 days. Then it will start and run for 5 seconds and cut off .Then it is impossible to start. Sure hope there is a simple solution. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like injector line vapor lock. The three day sitting period allows the fuel to seep down or away through a leak allowing air to enter the system. When you recrank the engine consumes the fuel that is "above" the air pocket, it runs for the 5 seconds, then the air becomes compressed enough to prevent the fuel to reflow. Fix the leak or seal, bleed the fuel lines to exit the air, and truck off into the sunset....

had the same problem with my chevy. Ai leakinginto the system. I replaced the line from the injector with a clear line,, to see if I found the problem. It will fill up with air right there. Finally found that the fuel seperator was leaking and allowing air in.

if you can't find the air leak a electric fuel pump may help with the prob. it will pump up the fuel system as soon as you hit the key switch, waiting for the glow plugs to heat.

If you have a 7.3 (up to around 1993) with an injection pump, you could have a leaking throttle shaft seal. The seal leaks under a vacuum allowing air to enter when the truck isn't running.

When you try to start the engine, the fuel from the filter to the injectors allows the engine to run for just a short period. Then the air that leaked in past the seal hits the injectors and blocks the fuel.

Eventually if you crank the engine enough times and long enough the air will be expelled as the fuel is finally pumped back through the system.

If you park the truck so the front is facing down hill and it starts and runs without the dying, I'd suspect the seal.
