Four men on FBI terror list have Portland area ties

- posted: 7:24 a.m.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The international list of people with possible ties to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks includes four men with Oregon addresses.

None of the men currently lives at the Portland and Hillsboro addresses on the list, The Oregonian reported Tuesday. It was unclear whether everyone on the list is a current suspect or simply wanted for questioning.

The list of 370 names was compiled by the FBI and European counterterrorism agencies for use in tracking down assets of people suspected of having some connection to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Kent Robinson, an assistant U.S. attorney in charge of the anti-terrorism investigation in Oregon, would not confirm or deny the accuracy of the list.

Selim Esiktas, a Florida pilot on the list, lived on and off in Portland from 1995 to this year with his ex-wife. He said he contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation of his own accord four times since Sept. 11.

Esiktas said he shared a flight simulator in August with Zacharias Moussaoui; the FBI thinks Moussaoui intended to join hijackers of the United Airlines flight that crashed in western Pennsylvania.

Esiktas, a former commercial airline pilot in Germany, said he told the FBI that he gave Moussaoui his business card after the two shared a four-hour test in a Boeing 747 simulator in Minnesota in which Esiktas responded to various in-flight emergencies.

"He seemed to be very emotionally affected by the way a professional pilot handles that kind of situation," Esiktas said.

Despite his cooperation with authorities, Esiktas said, his name, address and Social Security number ended up on the list, and his mother faced police with their guns drawn. He was angry when he found out.

"I was going to sue the whole world," Esiktas said.

Two other men on the list with Oregon addresses lived at an apartment complex in Hillsboro. A manager of the apartment said the unit had been empty for two weeks. She would not confirm whether the two men had lived there.

The other man on the list attended the American Language Academy, which is on the campus of the University of Portland but not affiliated with the college, in August and September 2000, according to John Furey, a spokesman for the college.

That man also once lived in the same San Diego apartment complex as suspected hijackers Nawaf Alhazmi and Khalid al-Midhar, who reportedly crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon.

A woman answering the door Monday at his former North Portland address said she had not seen him in a year.

The list of names was distributed to financial regulators in Europe last week. Finland's financial regulator put the list on its Web page Wednesday, removing it the next day and admitting that it made a mistake by releasing the personal information.
