Propane Heater For Greenhouse

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We are setting up a yurt-type greenhouse this weekend but need additional heating over the winter. The propane line is convenient (electricity is not).

Does anyone know of a mail-order source for a propane heater that would have an on-off thermostat?

Thanks.....

While I don't have an answer for your question, I did want to share with you a little knowledge that we recently gained when we ordered the heating system for our greenhouse. Lucky for us, the salesman was knowledgeable enough to mention that because of the moisture that is present in a greenhouse, you run the risk of your heating system rusting if you do not buy a stainless steel one. It costs a little more but it certainly saved us from putting in the other one which would have failed in a few years and have been a waste of money. If you do not plan to have one for a long time, you may not want the stainless steel one but for us it was the right answer. Our installation date is October 24th and I can't wait. I already have some plants growing in the greenhouse in anticipation. Good luck.

We bought a greenhouse this spring and are planning on putting it up this fall. I did a lot of price checking and the best deal I found was with Tek Supply. 800-457-8887 ot www.teksupply.com. I'd be interested in how much it costs you to heat it. We're planning on starting ours in March and not running it through the winter to save a little on the propane. Good luck! Stace

Where are all of you located? We should as a matter of course put that in our signature--it helps with gardening questions. I hope that sounded gentle and helpful as I intended and not as forum witch (ha,ha)

I guess Im just curious--esp about where stacey is from that they won't start until March. What will that get you? I don't know much about the subject but have read about passively solar greenhouses that have water cans (garbage cans?) that are painted black that absorb the heat and then release at night. I saw one that had black steel drums at the bottom of the greenhouse next to the glass that held the table/shelving. Just a thought. Surely someone here does that....

Passive heat, through drumms filled with water is not worth the space they take up. It just isn't realistic. Sounds nice though.

Try going to Lowe's and checking out their heaters. you didn't say how large your greenhouse was, but you can get a propane heater, with a set-back thermostat, for half the money and twice the heater.
