(19:15) Senior Hamas terrorist killed in 'work accident'

By Arieh O'Sullivan

The deputy to one of the most wanted Hamas terrorists died in an explosion earlier today as he was trying to plant a roadside bomb intended for Jewish settlers and IDF troops in the West Bank.

Security sources identified the man as Hani Rawajbeh, 22, a member of the military wing of Hamas and deputy to Mahmoud Abu Hanoud. His mangled body was found near the Nablus-area village of Kfar Zara which is frequently used by settlers and IDF patrols.

Palestinian reports said he was killed when hit by an IDF tank shell, but the IDF said that soldiers in the area did not open fire.

A statement from the Prime Minister's office, which oversees the General Security Service, said that Rawajbeh was killed "while trying to plant an explosive charge on the road."

It said he had been directly involved in the terror car bombings in Tiberias and Haifa in September 1999, as well as a bombing in Netanya in December 1999.
