Six Southern Shows

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Burning Spear : One Thread

A few comments on six recent performances across the South. Various friends from Athens GA enthusiastically attended shows across the South. Basic Set List: Intro; Burning Reggae; Identity; People Get Ready; This Man; The Youth; The Sun; Door Peep; Nyah Keith; Man in the Hills; Columbus; Old Marcus Garvey;Tumble Down; African Postman. Each show a different order with additions and subtractions as noted below.

Knoxville Tennessee: Early FREE Outdoor show in an old part of the city. It didn't look like many people here had ever heard of Burning Spear. This was part of a city sponsored concert series so you had lots of elderly folks in lawn chairs taking in the grooves. Burning Band smokin as always. No Door Peep; only rendition of Slavery Days of the Southern Six. This song resonants so powerfully down here....

Chattanooga Tennessee: Another early FREE outdoor show again part of a city sponsored concert series. This was a very nice venue with low mountains on the horizon. Diverse crowd with lots of bikers in the closed off streets. Wonderful Burning Experience with the special treat of Happy Day as the final song. This is a personal favorite and I am very thankful to have heard it.

Atlanta, Georgia: Late show at the Tabernacle which is right next to Centennial Olympic Park in the heart of Atlanta. It looked like less people than in the previous three years...maybe world events had people staying away from the area. We had a big bunch from Athens folks which always makes for a fun evening. Set seemed pretty standard.

Chapel Hill, North Carolina: Cat's Cradle Club late show. Mr. Rodney out mingling before the show with his quiet yet powerful presence. Very good performance by the band. I spent a good deal of the time back close to the board watching Virgo mix magic into the set. The sublime dub effects are tremendous...

Winston Salem, North Carolina: Ziggy's Club seems to always be a favorite with the Burning Crew. I have seen some outstanding Burning performances here over the years. Lots of awareness of the African Teacher. Good vibes and good music.

Asheville, North Carolina: The mountains as the backdrop, hippy dreads everywhere. No Tumle Down tonight but Rockin Time instead. After 5 previuos shows I can move pretty well with the each song.

This has been a tremendous uplifting experience for all of us from Athens GA. I thank Mr. Rodney, the Band, Crew, and all who work to bring the Burning Musical Experience to us all. We hope to see you next year.
