You're welcome, Ty. I think that I still have to do about two weeks' more of the updates. But I'm struggling to find time to do it, because I went on a little trip and fell far behind in thread-reading! One of these days, I'll get caught up, God willing.

John,

I noticed your absence. Figured you got banned with Jake-msn! Now how do I make a smiley face so you know I was only kidding?

I missed you too John, thought you were mad or something. Good to have you back.

Blessings.

-- Cristian (gabaonscy@hotmail.com), October 23, 2002.

Thanks, G & C.!
I don't get "mad" here at forum. (Definitely annoyed now and then, but not furious!) I don't let what other people write on 10% of the threads chase me away and keep me from enjoying the other 90% of the threads.

Dear John: In Spain on October 12 there is a grat feast day, namely NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL PILAR. In México as well as in Spain many men and women use the name Pilar: Ma. del Pilar for women and José Pilar for men. I'm sending you this page. Ihope you'll find it interesting:

The History of the Virgin of the Pillar

The tradition, as it has arisen from some documents of the Thirteenth Century that are preserved in the cathedral of Zaragoza, goes back to the period immediately after the Ascension of Jesus Christ, when the apostles, strengthened by the Holy Spirit, were preaching the gospel. It is said that, at that time (40 A.D.), the Apostle St. James the Greater, brother of San John and son of Zebedee, was preaching in Spain. Those lands had not received the gospel because they were found to be tied to paganism. St. James obtained the blessing of the Most Holy Virgin for his mission.

The documents state textually that St. James, "passing through Asturias and across Galicia and Castile, arrived with his new disciples at Aragon, the territory that was called Celtic Iberia, where the city of Zaragoza is situated, on the banks of the Ebro. There St. James preached for many days and, from among the many converts, chose as companions eight men, with whom, by day, he would discuss the kingdom of God and, at night, would return to the river banks to take some rest".

On the night of January 2 of the year 40, St. James was found with his disciples next to the River Ebro when "he heard the voices of angels who were singing, "Hail, Mary, full of grace," and he witnessed the appearance of the Virgin Mother of Christ, on foot atop a marble pillar. The Most Holy Virgin, who was still living in her mortal flesh, asked the Apostle to construct a church for her there, with the altar around the pillar on which she was standing. She promised that "this site will remain until the end of time, so that the power of God may work prodigies and wonders, through my intercession, for those who, in their needs, implore my patronage."

The Virgin disappeared, but left the pillar there. The Apostle St. James and the eight witnesses of the prodigy immediately began to build a church on that site, and, with the aid of the converts, the work moved forward with rapidity. But before the church was finished, St. James ordained one of his disciples as a priest for its service, consecrated it, and gave it the title, "St. Mary of the Pillar," before returning to Judea. This was the first church dedicated in honor of the Most Holy Virgin.

Many historians and researchers defend this tradition and adduce that there is a series of monuments and testimonials that demonstrate the existence of a church dedicated to the Virgin of Zaragoza. The oldest of these testimonials is the famous sarcophagus of St. Engracia, which has been preserved in Zaragoza since the 4th Century, when the saint was martyred. The sarcophagus depicts, in bas relief, the Virgin's descent from Heaven to appear to the Apostle St. James.

Likewise, around the year 835, a monk of St. Herman of Paris, named Almoino, edited some writings in which he speaks of the Church of the Virgin Mary of Zaragoza, "wherein had served, in the 3rd Century, the great martyr St. Vicent," whose remains were placed, by the bishop of Zaragoza, in the church of the Virgin Mary. Also, it was testified that before the Moslem occupation of Zaragoza (in 714), there was a temple dedicated to the Virgin there.

The people's devotion to the Virgin of the Pillar is so rooted among Spaniards, and from such remote times, that the Holy See permitted the establishment of the Office of the Pillar in which is consigned the appearance of the Virgin of the Pillar as "an ancient and pious belief."

The numerous miracles of the Virgin

In 1438, a book of miracles attributed to the Virgin of the Pillar was written. It contributed to the promotion of the devotion to such an extent that the Catholic King Ferdinand said, "We believe that none of the Catholics of the West is unaware of the fact that, in the city of Zaragoza, there is a temple of sacred, very ancient, and admirable devotion to the Holy and Most Pure Virgin and Mother of God, St. Mary of the Pillar, which is resplendent with innumerable and ongoing miracles".

The great miracle of the handicapped man of Calanda (1640)

This refers to a man who lost a leg to amputation. One day, years later, while dreaming that he was visiting the basilica of the Virgin of the Pillar, the leg returned to its place. It was the same leg that he had lost. Thousands of people bore witness, and on the right wall of the basilica, there is a picture recalling this miracle.

Pope Clement XII assigned the date of October 12 for the particular feast of the Virgin of the Pillar. But already since centuries before, in all the churches of Spain and among all the peoples subject to the Catholic king, the good fortune of having had the Mother of God in their region when she was still living in mortal flesh was being celebrated.

Three peculiar traits that characterize the Virgin of the Pillar and distinguish her from others:

1. There is the extraordinary coming of the Virgin during her mortal life. Unlike in other apparitions, the Virgin comes when still she is still living in Palestine: "He hath not done thusly with any other nation," the liturgy of January 2 will sing -- the feast of the Coming of the Virgin.

2. There is the column or pillar that the Lady herself brought so that upon it might be constructed the first chapel that, in fact, would be the first Marian temple in all of Christendom.

3. There is the linkage of the Pillarist tradition with the Jacobean tradition (of the Sanctuary of Santiago de Compostela). For that reason, Zaragoza and Compostela, the Pillar and St. James, have constituted two fundamental axes around which, for centuries, the spirituality of the Spanish fatherland has turned.

The symbolism of the pillar

The pillar or column represents the idea of the solidity of the building -- a church with the solidity of the firmness of the column -- confidence in the protection of Mary.

The column is a symbol of the conduit that unites Heaven and Earth, a "manifestation of the power of God in man and the power of man under the influence of God." It is a support of the holy, a support of daily life. Mary, the Gate of Heaven, the Ladder of Jacob, has been the woman chosen by God to come to our world. In her, Earth and Heaven have been united in Jesus Christ.

Columns guarantee the solidity of an edifice, be it architectural or social. To break them is to threaten the whole edifice. The column is the first stone of the temple, which is developed around it. It is the axis of the construction, which binds within itself the different levels. Mary is also the first stone of the Church, the temple of God. Around her, just like the reunited Apostles on the day of Pentecost, so is growing the People of God. The faith and hope of the Virgin encourage Christians in their effort to build the kingdom of God.

We see, in Exodus 13:21-22, that a column of fire by night accompanied the people of Israel, a pilgrim in the desert, directing its route.

In the Virgin of the Pillar, the people see symbolized "the presence of God, an active presence that guides the chosen people through the perils of the journey."

The Eucaristic liturgy of the Pillar:

The texts utilized are these:
In the First Reading, from 1 Chronicles 15, wherein is remembered the Virgin symbolized by the Ark of the Covenant, the presence of God is in the midst of his people, through Mary, who is joy for the Church.
The Second Reading (Hebrews 1:12-14) and the Gospel (Luke 11:27-28) also speak to us of the presence of the Virgin in the Church and of the praises with which the people pay tribute to her.
The Preface celebrates the wonders that God has made real in Mary, the "hope of the faithful and joy of all our people."
During the Opening Prayer (or Collect), there is a petition for the intercession of the Virgin, "fortress in Faith, security in Hope, and constancy in Love," -- as well as in the Prayer Over the Offerings, wherein is demonstrated the desire "to remain firm in the faith".

In the Entrance Antiphon, one thinks of the Virgin as "the column that guided and sustained, day and night, the people in the desert."
And in the Responsorial Psalm are recalled the words, "The Lord has crowned me, and above the column He has raised me".
In the Alleluia verse: "He set my feet upon the rock, and he put a new song in my mouth."

Dominant in the liturgy is the idea of the presence of Mary in the Church and of the firmness that her intercession and devotion procure for the People of God.

On the 12th day of October of 1492, precisely when the three caravels of Christopher Columbus were sighting the unknown lands of America on the other side of the Atlantic, the devotees of the Virgin of the Pillar were singing praises to the Mother of God in her sanctuary of Zaragoza, because that same day, known today as the Day of the Race, was already the day of the Virgin of the Pillar.

You did a magnificent job, John, with the translation. Thank you very much. This way many English speaking faithful will know about the old devotion to the Mother of God in Spain.
