MINEOLA, N.Y. -- A van used to transport workers through secure areas of local airports was stolen overnight, Nassau County police said Sunday.

"Considering recent events, we're being extra cautious," Detective Lt. Kevin Smith said.

The 15-passenger van, which has a pressure pump to de-ice planes, was stolen between 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday from a fenced-in lot of Allied Arrow Services, in Farmingdale.

The van is owned by Allied but is used by the Triangle Maintenance Corp., which performs airport maintenance. Allied also houses other Triangle equipment.

The van is not registered for roadway use but can be used at any of the airports in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The airports had been notified of the theft.

A second van was used to crash through the locked fence around the Allied lot. It was recovered behind the company's main building and has been impounded.

The missing white 1996 Ford van has large windows, and its sides are marked with a thick blue stripe and the words TRIANGLE SERVICES in block letters. It has large yellow smiley faces on its rear panels.

Telephone calls to Allied and Triangle on Sunday went unanswered.

Anyone with information about the van is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
