furniture building

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I would like to build two corner china hutches to hold my abundant collection of dishes that I have right now. Has anyone done this while working on their homes? I would like to possibly attach them to the walls and make them look like built-ins. Is there an area with patterns for this? I have taken classes in upholstery and woodworking so I would be able to use these skill in making furniture for our family room after I finish doing corner hutches in the dining room. I have a radial arm saw (given to me for free), a skill saw and screw drivers, and a router to work with. So I think this will be enough. My DH does not care to work with wood, but will be happy to help me if I come up with the plans. The ones I liked in the store were way out of my price range. Thanks Jenn

Go to your local library. You'll be amazed at the books and plans they have for things like this. I hope this helps.

My husband and I have done a few projects like this. Corners are a little harder to work with, but the best advice is to build it right there, not outside and try to fit it in later. I agree about the books. There is nothing like a picture to give you an idea of what to do!

At the local library here there are heaps of woodworking magzines with free plans in them as well as the instructions. Have you looked at your library in the periodicals section?

Southern living magazine has great plans that are free or extremely low priced. I've done it.

I found one book by Alf Martinsson or close to that spelling from England and couple of books with country furniture designs. I would love to have one of the old-fashioned built in buffets that used to be around, but unfortunately my dining room would not be big enough and that is why I am looking for plans for corner cupboards. I was considering from floor to ceiling and using plain glass and getting some etching cream and putting in my own designs. Thanks for the suggestions from everyone. Jenn
