Governor Among those Taking Cipro after Anthrax Found in his New York City Offices

(New York-WABC/AP, October 17, 2001) — Eyewitness News has learned that anthrax has been discovered in Governor George Pataki's Manhattan office. It was found in a room used by his State Police security detail. The Governor says tests taken Monday night came back positive this morning.

We are just getting this information, and are sending a crew on the scene. We are expecting a news confererence from the governor any moment, and will bring it to you as soon as possible.

The governor's complex of offices is on the 38th and 39th floors of a building at 633 Third Avenue. The building has been closed for further testing and decontamination work. Pataki said the offices would reopen Monday.

No employees in the governor's office have tested positive for anthrax but all of them, including Pataki, will begin taking the antibiotic Cipro as a precaution.

"I feel fine," Pataki said Wednesday morning. "I feel great."

Pataki spokesman Michael McKeon called the room where the anthrax was discovered a "secure" one the public does not have access to. Neither he nor Pataki would say immediately how authorities believe anthrax got into the room. Pataki scheduled a news conference in New York City on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the incident.

The governor's aides will use other offices until cleared to return to their suite, Pataki said.

"I think everybody is committed to doing everything we can to make sure the state is run as well as it always has and to respond to this (World Trade Center) crisis," Pataki said Wednesday.
