RF&P Passenger Locomotives

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

I know this is an ACL/SAL forum, but did any of the RF&P 1000 series E8 units, which operated on the SAL/ACL passenger trains survive Amtrak service?

Thanks in advance,

Seeing the RF&P unit on Oct 13 2001 would have been a hell of a birthday present for me!!

Oops! I meant October 13, 1968. I wish I had seen RF&P 1015 on SCL # 92 last week

As per another answer- RF&P 1015 was on SCL #92 The Champion out of Jacksonville October 13, 2001

Adding to Doug Riddell's comments about the RF&P's overmaintained E units -- when the ACL diesels first started running through to D.C., RF&P engine crews were regularly writing them up for oil on the engine room floor in their locomotive inspection reports. Thereafter, the oil disappeared and the RF&P engine crews noted newly bored holes in the engine room floor.

One of the R.F.& P. E's is in the possession of the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke. It is in a sad state of decay however, but is supposed to be restored at some point by the Roanoke Chapter of the NRHS.

The RF&P E8s (as well as all other RF&P power) were maintained so meticulously (actually, over maintained according to one retired FRA inspector) that most were gladly received by Amtrak and worked hard until the SDP40Fs fully displaced them in the early 1970s.

According to Fred Frailey's "Zephyrs Chiefs and Other Orphans", the following RF&P E8s went to Amtrak and were numbered in the 200 series. A few were in RF&P blue and gray attire when they were retired in 1975 and scrapped, although others did get the "bloody nose" treatment:

1001 213 1005 214 1006 215 1007 216 1008 217 1010 218 1011 219 1012 220 1013 221 1014 222 1015 223

RF&P did have some E8B units which were traded to ACL, but none of SCLs B-units were picked up by Amtrak.
