O.K. You ask for it: Name three colors, using at least 15 letters and not more than 26 that do not rhyme (in English) with any other words. An extra pat on the head if you can come up with a forth word that also does not rhyme. No hints this time.....

15 letters each, Mitch?

-- Cathy N. (keeper8@attcanada.ca), October 19, 2001.

I am going to assume you are talking about total letters comibined...so here goes....orange, indigo, sienna, ivory, total 22.....let me know if these others rhyme with anything...the only one I am positive about is orange.

-- Lacey (cddllt@webtv.net), October 19, 2001.

how about Magenta? i don't think anything ryhmes with that.

-- jillian (sweetunes483@yahoo.com), October 19, 2001.

This made interesting conversation at breakfast this morning. Indigo- -vertigo. What rhymes with purple? Ivory--victory. Rouge was a colour before it was make-up.

-- Cathy N. (keeper8@attcanada.ca), October 19, 2001.

Rats! I also am going to knock out my sienna-Vienna/vendetta......but how about orchid & mauve?

-- Lacey (cddllt@webtv.net), October 19, 2001.

This is bad...I'm not getting any chores done over this.....looked up quadruple to see if it is actually a word, was in the dictionary so guess that knocks out purple.....and my vendatta should knock out magenta

-- Lacey (cddllt@webtv.net), October 19, 2001.

Somewhere I heard that Oragne was that only word that couldn't be rhymed.

-- Cindy (S.E.IN) (atilrthehony@countrylife.net), October 19, 2001.

orange purple and orchid for the three I am going to have to think about the other one.

-- mindy (speciallady@countrylife.net), October 19, 2001.

how about serendipity for the last word.

-- mindy (speciallady@countrylife.net), October 19, 2001.

ok serendipity rhymes with pity I wasn't thinking. Back to the drawing board

-- mindy (speciallady@countrylife.net), October 19, 2001.

Mitch, what a lot of fun eveyone is having with you!! You are definitely making everyone think. I am clueless personally when it comes to this sort of thing, but then I never liked puzzles or word- finds either. Don't know why, because I love to read. I hope everyone has a great time figuring out Mitch's fun puzzles!!!!

-- Melissa (me@home.net), October 19, 2001.

I only came up with orange on my own so I'm going to try for rhymes for other guesses here.

Magenta? placenta

Sienna? Vienna

Mauve? suave

Ivory? history

Orchid? forbid, more kid, sore kid

Purple? circle

I'm still left with just 'orange' in the colors.

As to the other word for which there is no rhyme, I'm going to go with "rhythm" for that one.

I'll also throw out a question about the word "rhythm." What characteristic does the word "rhythm" possess above all other words in the English language? Any guesses on that? ;o)

-- Gary in Indiana (gk6854@aol.com), October 19, 2001.

Schools use to teach the vowels as A,E,I,O,U and sometimes W & Y. I understand the W & Y is no longer taught....anyway Rhythm is one of these words where the sometimes applies..... is this what you are looking for? Now can anyone come up with a word that has W as a the only vowel? Hint some of us may have one on our land...we do

-- Lacey (cddllt@webtv.net), October 19, 2001.

Lacey, by playing Scrabble a lot, I found the word cwm which means cirque, which means something about a steep walled basin.

-- Cindy (S.E.IN) (atilrthehony@countrylife.net), October 19, 2001.

Cindy that was exactly the word I was looking for! I am glad you got it so quickly...got to thinking about the 'thread etiquette' and thought I should make a new thread with it....sorry Mitch...guess these games trip my trigger. Anyway, back to the colors....

-- Lacey (cddllt@webtv.net), October 19, 2001.

Hi cuties and Gary, think simple colors, small town colors, not Las Vegas type colors. (fact, not hint). Two have been mentioned, the third shines on alone but the forth word has appeard in no measure.

I just got back from a trip to the veterans medical clinic, it takes 2 hours to get there and is a hard drive through the mountains. Gasoline is $1.04 at Winchester, Va., the lowes I have seen in a long while.

Now for the obevious hint: four words equalling 23 letters.

-- mitch hearn (moopups@citlink.net), October 19, 2001.

OBVIOUSLY if you put more than one word together, you can make things ryhme, like MAYBERRY could be fat fairy, BAY Cherry. I'm in art class, and you'd think i'd have better ideas than this.

-- jillian (sweetunes483@yahoo.com), October 19, 2001.

ok mitch help us out a little. Which two have been mentioned? I have to leave in forty five minutes and won't be able to find out the answer til Monday. Your playing with my sleep. I do my best thinking when I am supposed to be sleeping this is one that will keep me up. going over words over and over in my mind.

-- mindy (speciallady@countrylife.net), October 19, 2001.

WHAT? Your going to miss tomorrows stumper? I put three hints in the last post. So you want me to say something like: Barney likes an indian? Or the astronauts didn't go to mars yet because its too dry? How long would it take them to get there?

-- mitch hearn (moopups@citlink.net), October 19, 2001.

could the one that shines be silver?

-- Lacey (cddllt@webtv.net), October 19, 2001.

Mitch, I am offended! You addressed a post to "cuties AND Gary?" What are you attempting to imply here??

As to the color, I'll also go with silver and orange. I also am guessing you'll say purple and dispute that it rhymes with circle.

Lastly, no, that is not the unique characteristic of "rhythm" for which I was looking. Keep trying. ;o)

-- Gary in Indiana (gk6854@aol.com), October 19, 2001.

I've called everyone I know. All we can come up with is purple and turquoise. Mitch, you have to give an answer before I go to bed tonight. I have no more friends to call and my brain hurts!

-- Micheale from SE Kansas (mbfrye@totelcsi.net), October 19, 2001.

Well let's see... orange, I am certain on; silver----I'll go with orchid---can't agree with those 'knock out' rhyme and something that can't be measured??? taupe---comes to mind (it's a close spelling to tape) yes my mind is frying...... on rhythm is it you don't really hear the vowel? don't be offended Gary....Maybe he didn't want to refer to you as a hunk where everyone else could read it :) .

-- Lacey (cddllt@webtv.net), October 19, 2001.

no, no, no...I am such a dope---which rhymes with taupe.....amber is a measurement

-- Lacey (cddllt@webtv.net), October 19, 2001.

O.K. Gary, your proabilly cute to other people, but your name indicates your not female, therefore not cute to me. Lacy, your a thinker, after 5 direct hints you steped ahead of the crowd. Say circle purple, circle purple, circle purple, this is a rhyme? As for rhythm, go post your own thread!! There is a forth word which you cannot guess within a dozen guesses, that does not rhyme with other words. The three colors have been found identified andspoke aloud, whats the forth word?

-- mitch hearn (moopups@citlink.net), October 19, 2001.

OK, OK, my brain hurts...reading & re-reading your hints.......orange, silver,....am going to change to purple since you hinted as much.....now for a leap/ you don't specify the fourth is a color...how long would it take the astronauts to get to Mars???? It would take month's & month's!!!!! Or at least a month to get the proper 23 letters :)

-- Lacey (cddllt@webtv.net), October 19, 2001.

Oooo the suspense. I was finally able to get myself to bed after my last posting. Couldn't really sleep until I thought of your "couldn't be guessed 'within' a 'dozen' guesses." Tell me it is Month......

-- Lacey (cddllt@webtv.net), October 20, 2001.

orange and purple were guessed by my boys, then silver was suggested; considering how many letters are left, it could be a certain month.

-- Cathy N. (keeper8@attcanada.ca), October 20, 2001.

Ok Mitch..throw out the brain teaser book NOW! ;o) For those that named purple..you have obviously never read Mabel Murple by Sheree Fitch to your kids!!!! I know orange doesn't rhyme with anything but I am honestly stuck on the rest. Ochre rhymes with croaker, silver with pilfer, mauve with stove, pewter with scooter, turquoise with boys..... ARGH! Supercallafragilisticexpeialidocious!!!!!!!!!

-- Alison in N.S. (aproteau@istar.ca), October 20, 2001.

O.K. People the words are Orange, Purple, Silver, and Month. Your having trouble with these stumpers because you and I do not think alike, the hints are being missed or not pursued all the way. 1. "shines" on alone; stated after admitting twohad been mentioned. 2. "has appeared in no measure" conserning the forth word, I did not say cannot be measured. 3. "Barney likes.." Barney who? Miller? Fife? Rubble? the dinasour? Do any of these Barneys have anything to do with a color? 4. "Barney likes an indian", which indian? What well known indian has a name that relates to a color? Could it be Jay SILVERheels who played Tonto on the lone ranger. 5. "Astronauts - too dry", If their too dry, get them a drink, what do astronauts drink? Could it be an Orange colored and flavored item? 6. "How long..." couples with "measures". 7. "Dozen" couples with #6.

Maybe this will help you in the future stumpers...

-- mitch hearn (moopups@citlink.net), October 20, 2001.

Very Good Mitch! Your hints all make perfect sense to me, especially after you gave the answers.

-- Melissa (me@home.net), October 20, 2001.

Gary, I think that rhythm is the only word that uses only the "y" as a vowel.

-- mitch hearn (moopups@citlink.net), October 20, 2001.

nope.. there's sky and fly.... lets see purple orange encyclopedia and.... dictionary?
