FDA To Block Illegal Cipro Sales From Foreign Web Sites

The government is cracking down on sales of anthrax-fighting antibiotics ordered from foreign countries over the Internet. Selling Cipro without a prescription is illegal.

The Food and Drug Administration is also checking whether the pills coming in from abroad are fakes, and if the dosage is enough to ward off anthrax. U.S. Customs has been alerted to stop shipments at the border.

Dozens of Web sites have popped up in the past two weeks. Some promise Cipro for $7 a pill -- and said that no doctor's visit is needed. Some sites are based overseas.

State pharmacy boards notified the FDA Thursday that they're checking into U.S.-based Internet sites selling Cipro.
