Air Force Couple Marries By Proxy

Exchanged Vows By Speakerphone

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Georgia -- During past wars, proxy marriages were common -- performed mainly for military personnel stationed overseas. Today's war against terrorism is proving to be no exception -- as one Air Force couple has shown.

Senior Airman Sandra Beckman, who's stationed at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia, exchanged wedding vows with her husband via speakerphone on Tuesday.

Beckman's husband -- Staff Sgt. Max Parris -- is currently on assignment in England, after the Pentagon moved him there following attacks against the United States.

Parris planned on being back for his December wedding following a deployment stint in Saudi Arabia.

Now, the newlyweds are eligible for joint assignment.

Proxy marriages require witnesses, but do not require that a couple be in the same geographic location.
