Actually, had I not disconnected some creative wiring in there, we could have had a fire before now. The previous owner had plugged in a thin extension cord and run it to the wall, where he cut off the end and hardwired a light socket to it. Then he had taken more of the same extension cord wire and run it from there to another light fixture. I'd guess it was done in the early seventies as the cord was pretty fragle. The other light is hanging from a properly-wired fixture in the ceiling. What I'd like to do is run proper wiring from an outlet to the two wall fixtures so I have enough light and no fire risk. Maybe tomorrow. Still looking for a washer, don't want to buy a new one.

There is some validity to buying a new one if you can pay for it in cash. I have lived with a number of used washers, dryers, stoves, and 'fridges -- got absolutely sick of having to fix them or having to pay someone to fix them!

Now, the $64,000 Question: will the new ones go down in price if you wait a few months? My thinking is that we're heading into a recession, and lots of applicance stores are bound to go out of business.
