Update on problems milking jersey cow.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Thanks to everyone who responded to my plea for help. Here's the update.

Patience and persistence have paid off! I kept trying, increased her feed, and calmly and lovingly explained to her what good friends we were going to be {~lol~ I'm sure that last one is what did it}! I am now getting about 2 quarts of milk from the one quarter at each milking. I no longer have to stop and wait for a little trickle, she's really letting down.

Thanks for the advice!

That's WONDERFUL, Mona. And it might just be your love and talking to her that did it, you never know. I remember reading about a British lady who so loved her cows that she bathed and brushed them daily, and kept "rugs" (blankets) on them all winter. Her theory was that then the calories that they would have had to use to make heat would go toward making milk. The statistics that she kept verified it - she got lots more milk than her neighbors with the same kinds of cows. This was during WWII, so every drop of milk counted.
