Interesting Place Names

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

After seeing the name "Bowlegs" in another thread, I thought it would be interesting to see what other unique place names you know of. If you know the origin of the name, please share that, too. I remember a place in Western PA called "Frogtown" but I don't know how it got it's name. Also, we lived in a tiny little place called "Yellowdog". Used to be a limestone mining camp, and the story goes that all the houses used to be yellow and every family had a dog! Someone tried to rename the place "Shadyside", but that didn't go over very well with the locals.

Cathy~ There is a town in central Arkansas called "Toad Suck". Honestly! There is one about 40 miles from where I live called "Hogeye". Seems that animals are important when naming towns in Arkansas. I don't know the reason for their origins.

There is a town in central Florida spelled Kissimmee, pronounced Ka sim ee; just 9 miles from St. Cloud where I was born 7 decades ago.

Bone Gap Illinois is about 20 miles from us. Don't know the reason for the name. Flat Rock is a little farther away. Years ago, when we'd go to KY Lake, we went through a wide place in the road named Possum Trot. The cafe there was named Trot Inn. Lots of interesting names in Appalacian mt. of KY; to name a couple--Cut Shin, Greasy Fork (named because bear were butchered on a large rock in the creek and the water downstream would be greasy)

I live in Good Luck (no Kidding!) but my mail comes through Summer Shade-thats where the kids go to school, its on No-Bob road, just down the road from Marrow Bone, if you go the other way, you go through Eighty-Eight. Go north if you want to go to Wisdom. As a child, I attended a school on Stinking Creek.

Thanks to all of you! I have had a lot of fun reading all these answers. For years, my parents lived on Skunk Hollow Road; right after I got married, they moved 4 hours east to Polecat Road! Down the road and around the bend, you will also find Goose Hollow Road and Fox Hollow Road.
