Can an Anglican divorced person remarry in a Catholic Church?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

Hello

I have a cousin who's Anglican and had been married for 20 years. He's now divorced and wants to marry a Catholic girl in the Catholic church? Is this possible? I dont think that he would be able to do this without nullifying the marriage. But what grounds can one nullify their marriage?, that he found someone else....

Thanks gor your answer in advance. Shelia

You are almost correct, Shelia.
No one can "nullify" a marriage. (As Jesus said, "What God has joined, let not man separate.").
However, in order for your cousin to marry a Catholic woman, he would have to have, from her diocesan marriage court (tribunal) a Declaration of Nullity, an official recognition that the first "union" was not a valid, sacramental marriage in the eyes of God and the Church.

That is why the couple need to speak to the woman's pastor about this without delay. The process involved in obtaining the declaration is not a rapid one, and it is by no means guaranteed.

Here are a couple of sites that I hope will answer all your further questions about this subject:
