Afghan consulate closed in Karachi

By Associated Press, 11/10/2001 11:12

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) Afghanistan's consulate in the port city of Karachi was formally shut Saturday in the latest Pakistani move against the ruling Taliban movement.

Pakistan, which was the leading supporter of the Taliban, has dropped its backing of the movement and sided with the United States in its bombing campaign in Afghanistan.

Pakistan is the only country that maintains diplomatic relations with the Taliban. But in the past week, Pakistan ordered the consulate in Karachi closed and told Taliban Ambassador Abdul Salam Zaeef to stop holding his almost daily news conferences at the embassy in the capital, Islamabad.

In addition to its embassy, the Taliban still have diplomatic missions in the western Pakistani cities of Peshawar and Quetta.
