YIPEEEE!! FREE WOOD!!!!!!!!!!!! (Construction)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

WHOO-HOOOO!!!!!!!!! -I JUST GOT FREE LUMBER!!!!!!!! I saw that they were moving a two story house, and there was this LOVELY pile of odd pieces of wood. There were 2x4's, 2x2's, broken plywood, some of it nailed together, and I just figured that it didn't look like they wanted ANY of it!!!!!! So I asked the two men if it was to be thrown away and they said YES!!!! So I asked if anyone would be upset if I removed a few boards tonight and they said NO!!!! I was careful not to ask if I could have it, they don't own it so they cannot give it, I just asked if anyone would be UPSET! On the way out I asked if the bricks were also to be thrown out and they are!!!!!!!!! So now I can have a brick walkway in my homemade PVC pipe greenhouse, and wood for a new chicken house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good for you -- one man's trash IS another man's treasure. It saves them having to rent a truck or dumster to get rid of it!!

I work for a state university -- they won't even give the wood away when they cut down a tree -- they bring it to a landfill!! Talk about waste (well what can you expect form a university that also uproots AND THROWS AWAY all the flowers in all their gardens -- 3 - 4 times a year!)

MissJudi, If I were you, I would talk to the guys in grounds keeping, and if they aren't throwing it in a bulk roll off, ask them to drop it off at your house. I am sure they hate to see it wasted as well.

Damn Bureaucracies(sp?) are afraid someone might get hurt picking it up I bet.

Good luck

Response to YIPEEEE!! FREE WOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably so. That's why I was carefull not to ask those guys if they would GIVE me the wood. They don't have the authority, so they would have to ask their boss, who would have to ask the insurance company, and that is a lot of work to find a home for what is to them, GARBAGE!! I just asked if anyone would get angry!

I LOOOVE bottom feeding and its a good day when I make a good score. I even have a little business card that sez I haul construction debris, appliances etc that aids an air of "legitimacy" to my scrounging.

Sometimes you gotta do a little finessing tho. A while back the place where I worked was adding on to their big metal manufacturing facility. It was generally company policy to throw stuff out rather than give it to employees. There was this BIG pile of 6'wide x 6"thick x 16' long pieces of insulation. I approached the contractor, gave him one of my cards and offered to haul the insulation away for free. He sez "Yeah, take it away that way we don't have to mess with it." I asked him for a note to that effect which I showed to my boss. He was clearly unhappy with me (not unusual) but he wouldn't go against the wishes of their contractor. I got enuf insulation to insulate the shop portion of my pole building.

Isn't it just amazing what goodies people throw away! Some people just have no vision huh? My hubby always croaks about it, but I can't help peeking into the dumpsters when we go take the trash. You would be boggled to see the goodies in there. I have seen fishing tackle, practically new clothing, a wonderful copper bucket that I put a plant in, and lots of wonderful treasures. One person's junk is another one's treasure for sure! I agree completely! You just have to look at it with some inventiveness! This year I got 10 free railroad ties because I just stopped and asked if the owner wanted them hauled off. It was obvious that they weren't being used for anything....just kinda laying around.....He said I was welcome to them! Those things are a doozy to pick up, but made a wonderful strawberry bed!

Please, come to my house, I have trees to cut, to help me clear the land for a vegetable garden. But it seems, I must pay thousands, to pay someone, to take the trees away. And there you sit, in need of firewood, whilst I need not the heat (in most times). What a mixed up situation. Heavens Speed.

To Irony, I guess its too much to hope that you might be in Oregon? I'd cheerfully help you out. :

I often stop at building sites to ask if they want their scraps. Out in the country people are more than willing to give you their scraps. Closer to town they get law fever and dont want you even on the property to ask.
