When I try to open the .dat file in Windows Media Player, it says it doesn't support the file type. I have Version 7.01, but it still won't play. It plays on my mother's computer, but I was wondering if I am maybe missing something?

Use PowerDVD. It will play VCDs and i have never had a problem with it.

You need to have dvd software installed on your pc for the dat file to play in wmp,like power dvd or win dvd,hope this helps...

I've had the same problem until someone pointed out you can copy the .dat file to your computer, rename the extension to .mpg and it will then work! I think maybe sometimes you might need Isobuster to extract the file from a disc or bin file. Well, I use Win 95 and my cousin uses Win ME and it worked by renaming on both.

Ok, I found the answer. I needed to change one of the file extensions in the Windows System folder from .hp to .vxd. Can't remember the exact file, but it says at vcdhelp.com I believe.

"In order to play VideoCD's on a PC (or even copy the dat files from a VideoCD in the CDROM drive to the PC's disk) you have to have the virtual device driver SCSI1HLP.VXD in Window's \SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS directory; otherwise, the file structure will not be recognized by Windows. My file was there but some program had changed it's extension. After renaming and rebooting, my VideoCD's now run without a hitch."

I have the same problem. Maybe it will work... but i don't like the word "rebooting" :|

Greez: I have Win MP v 9 on Windows 2000. It plays the vcd fine without the scsi1hlp.vxd driver. (Which seems related to SCSI devices).

On the other hand, it hangs trying to play the same disk on my other Windows 2000 computer. Any suggestions how to troubleshoot? TIA, Jack
