Horse Wanted

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I'm just beginning the search for a horse for my daughter. She is a beginner rider, but has experience riding and knowledge. (a few years worth) I would prefer a gelding, but would consider the right mare. Would prefer a small horse as opposed to a large pony. We are in NE Pa, willing to travel a bit. If anyone has a horse (or knows of a horse) they are looking to sell to a GOOD home, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!!

Contact your local youth camps and horseback riding facilities. They often have bomb-proof horses that are still healthy and capable, but are not quite up to the rigors of all-day, every-day work anymore.

Mary, I am in NW PA and depending on what you are interested in, I might have a filly you would like to check out. She is not yet 2, so is not broke but has been imprinted at birth and has lots of ground training. She will mature at 16 hands so not a small girl. Has a wonderful disposition, I have trailered her, she is perfect for the farrier, knows whoa, and I have ponied her through the trails and also on the road so she is used to traffic. She lounges and I have had a light weight saddle on her. She is 1/2 tb 1/2 tenn walker. Email if you are interested.

Thanks Shannon

I've already put the word out through our local stables. Everything we've looked at is either "dead on it's feet" or not very personable. Maybe I'm just being too picky... Usually this time of year is an easy time to buy, but not much luck yet. It's ok though as we aren't in a hurry. Still haven't got that fence up! We'll probably have to board until the spring if we find the right horse.

Is your daughter looking for a show or trail horse? I know several farms in the Binghamton, NY area.

E-mail me for the telephone numbers and what age/breed that you need.

Try Second Wind Adoption at Crossed Sabers Stable in West Union WV. They place horses all over the country. They also have a great web site. Most of the horses are retired race and show horses with a few rescue animals. If you can't find the web site by doing a search, let me know and I will find it for you. Good luck.

If you dont mind training, the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption agency, which takes ferrel horses from out west to all over the country, is a good route to go. We recently adopted a yearling mare, and the price was only 140 bucks. Some facilities need to be in order before you can apply for this program- round pen, or corral, and 3 or more sided shelter 8X8 +, a few other things. My wife really handled this department, if you need or want more info, E mail and I will have her respond.

A little more info....

My daughter rides English, but I think she'll end up being better suited to Western. I really don't have the time to devote to a horse requiring training. Someday I would like to look into an adoption horse, but that's a long way off! We're taking our time with this... the right one will come along. I don't care to buy from a horse "dealer." I realize there are good ones out there, but I don't think the majority can honestly answer questions about a horses temperment, vices, health history, etc. Would much rather buy a horse from someone who is selling their "pet!" (so to speak)

Thanks again, Mary
