The Associated Press Published: Nov 17, 2001
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The son of a California state senator was fatally shot while walking home early Saturday in what appears to have been a robbery, police said. Hunter McPherson, 27, son of Sen. Bruce McPherson, was near his home at about 2 a.m. when he was shot on the sidewalk in front of a house, police said.
He died of wounds to his upper torso. No arrests have been made.
Bruce McPherson is a Republican from Santa Cruz and a candidate for lieutenant governor. He declined comment Saturday.
Senate Minority Leader Jim Brulte said he met Hunter McPherson in 1993, when his father first ran for the state Assembly.
"He was just a really decent young man who always had a pleasant disposition," Brulte said. "It's a very close-knit family. This is just a tragedy."
Police did not say if anyone was with Hunter McPherson at the time of the shooting, but said no other victims were involved.
