a/c home and car Turn on your a/c

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Turn on your a/c units at least 10 minutes every month, it keeps the seals wet, prevents feron leakage and unit failure, you will need them this spring.

Good advice Mitch, but the mere thought of turning on the air- conditioning when the wind is howling in January, is giving me the shivers!!! I will try to remember to do it though!

My husband's, an HVAC tech, sends a word of caution with that, straight ac units, especially older ones, that do not have a crankcase heater, should not be turned on during temperatures below mid-50's. During colder weather, refrigerant migrates to the coldest spot, which would be the compressor. Starting compressor during colder weather could easily slug or disable compressor.
