Updates to BTS Portal

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Hi guys,

I made a couple of updates to the Beyond the Sidewalks Portal.

I fixed the link to GICC's new EZboard forum and I changed the link from the old back-up forum (which apparently went hooters up while I was away) to Joy's new forum on EZboard. The link button still says "BTS Back-up Forum" - I need to make a new link button. Hopefully I'll get to that this weekend...

I also noticed that the BTS chat room is dead. Does anyone want a new chat room? I *think* I can put one right here in BTS (using javascript) if anyone is interested. But, I guess if this place goes hooters up it won't matter much.

Let me know your thoughts regarding the chat room (and anything else for that matter). :-)

-Jim

"hooters up" ?!?! Sheesh!

We haven't been using chat, as far as I know. Obviously, I haven't since I haven't even clicked on it in months! My thought is that perhaps in the doldrums months, such as January and February, we might want to set up a room and a time to chat. But I'm betting that until after New Year's, everyone is going to be fairly busy!

Well now Jim.........interesting analogy..... ;>). I think Joy is right, chatting in the long, long winter nights sounds like fun.

Jim...I think a chatroom sounds great, especially as Joy said, during Jan. and Feb. But, tell me exactly what "hooter's up" means??!!

Oh Marcia, I want to answer that one so much! \ch{:)}

Heh.

Well, I guess I put my foot in it that time, eh? Maybe I should have used the phrase "toes up" or, better yet, "hooves up" for the livestock aficionados out there.

My bad! ;-)

Marcia: I'm concerned that the chat room I create will be another javascript version like the old one - meaning you won't be able to access it. I think I remember hearing that MSN was compatible for Web TV users - is that true? Do you know of any other chat rooms that are accessible to Web TV users?

I'd hate to create yet another forum that you - and maybe others - maybe would not have access to...

TalkCity will support WebTV. It has it's good points and bad points. Maybe they've improved it since I've been there, but it does like to throw people out in the middle of chat. And it seems to like to throw some out more than others. Don't know if that's because of their ISP's or their computers or what. www.talkcity.com Unfortunately, you have to register THERE too.

I use MSN messenger all the time with some friends of mine. Is that that same as chat? I've used Talkcity briefly in the past, not lately though. So I'm sure that works with msntv. I hate to say that I haven't done my homework on what works or doesn't with my "webbie". Maybe I should check with some of my webtv user's groups.

I think the phrase "belly up" would work :-)!!

At my age, up is a relative term. Sideways, maybe... ;o)

-- Anonymous, November 20, 2001

Polly...with me, even the term "sideways" doesn't work. That darn theory of relativity and gravity are sure doin' a number on me!! Nuff' said :-)!

Mine have never pointed up when I'm down..always hiding between my arms and ribs. sigh..Sucks to be me... :o) By the way, its a much politer term than how I usually phrase it..My brother taught me that one years ago!!LOL Not a very ladylike saying but then again, he's no lady!

Chatting could be fun. However, the few times I've visited the chat room, there's never been anyone there...except one time Earthmama was there right after I was, I guess.

If we had one, we would have to agree to meet at certain times and then have at least a designated greeter to make sure that we stay in the room if we're the first one else in. Obviously, we would have to make it for a time range when we could fit everyone from Nova Scotia to the West Coast in. I don't get home until 7 pm weeknights, so I'd probably be the last one in and you guys would have all gone to bed! But maybe a Sunday night or something. I dunno...you guys can certainly move forward without me in a chat room, too!

It would be fun to talk live, though (even though I don't get much chance to think and therefore put my foot in my mouth much more.) Oh, and I type sort of fast...

Yes, having a "chat night" usually works best. I have a group of online friends that meet twice weekly beginning at 9:00 p.m. central time, which makes it 7 p.m. on the West Coast and 10 p.m. on the East Coast. Fortunately for us, the East Coasters are sort of night owls, so they manage to stay up.

I discovered I can be in two chat rooms at once, and that was when I had dial-up instead of cable! Twice as much chatting. I just size the windows so that I can have both of them open next to each other and switch back and forth.

Sheepish, typing fast is a GOOD thing! Marcia, I've never used IM, but I don't think the chat rooms are the same thing.

Drats! A perfectly good explanation gone to waste. You guys catch on way too fast. And it was a subject I knew something about!

I'll stick to the b-board. Between being a one handed typist and suffering what my DW calls "an intermittent mental hernia" ( I like that better than when she says I should walk on my hands , cause no one can walk on their feet with their head up that far up an unpleasant location :>) I'm not fast enough on the draw for a chatroom.
