plans for a hay rack

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We just built a new barn and are planning to put a hay rack on the wall about 6 feet long. It is for cows so how high off the ground and how much space between the boards so their heads don't fit in. Anybody ever made one ? Thanks in advance! cara lewis

Cara, If the hayrack is just for cows and you don't intend to make it dual purpose for feeding grain as well, make the rack about 30 inches off the floor and as high as you want even up to the ceiling. Cut a hole in the haymow floor and fill it from the top. Angle the top away from the bottom 30 to 45 degrees. Place the slats about 3 inches apart. They will be able to pull out plenty of hay with their tongues and are less likely to waste it.
