One aspect of the history of psychology *just is* studying the development of psychology's theories. Without a more specific question, though, it is hard to say much more. You might try looking at one of the many textbooks in the history of psychology. Ray Fancher's _Pioneers of Psychology_ is a particularly readable one.

I have exactly the same question as you! I don't know where to look but a book by Jones and Elcock, 'History and Theories of Psychology' can be helpful for the history side of the question. Also look at www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/historyofpsych.html which has a fair bit of information. I was given an example of looking at the shift from behaviourism to cognitivism and their link to the development of history. If you can't find anything else, email me and i might have come up with some more!
