Well, I purchased and installed Norton 2002. It took over 4 whole hours to download the thing...28,282KBs (whatever they are).Now I have three icons on the desktop: one is the original download, one is a backup and one says "launch Norton 2002". Well, I clicked onto the launch one and got another download window. After several attempts, I went back to the symantec site and read all about installing Norton, understanding perhaps 10% of what they are talking about. I sent an e-mail to their tech support, begging for someone to have pity on a middle aged person, unfamiliar with computerese...anyone here know anything about getting this to run?????? I have Windows 98.

Hi Lesley. I am also a technoidiot. Can you find where it says scan? click on it. When it finds a virus, click on fix. This is the limit of what I know and it seems to work for me.

Also ours is set to update and scan on a daily basis, so we don't have many problems. Hubby handles all the programming. Do you have a grandkid handy to ask?

This is why I pay the extra $10 to get the CD and the manual in the fancy box. I also like the option of installing to any new PC or hard drive I might get.

In any event, it sounds like maybe you haven't yet installed the program. I don't want to get into semantics here but this is important. By doing the download all you've done is put all the information for the program into a folder on your hard drive (much as it would be on the CD out of the box). Now, just as with the CD in your drive, you have to install the program onto your hard drive.

To do that you can probably either just click on the icon for the original download. If that doesn't work you'll need to get into that folder and look for a file named something like setup or setup.exe and click on that. After you do the installation it'll work for you. SIGH.....at midnight I discovered that you have to be online to install the program...DUH..as soon as I clicked on the icon when I was still online, the whole thing started churning and whirring and installed itself, then did a scan on the 30,000 some odd files. Here is what I still do not understand: On two forums, a bunch of folks whom I DO NOT HAVE THEIR E_MAILS in my address book got an e-mail from "me" with the virus attachment..from my address book, only 3 folks got one.......how does THAT work?

Lesly, I am also wondering what is going on. I got two from something that looked like Melissa's address, but she has not opened mail. I have "heard" that you can get infected if you just read the email, and that it will send to addresses that you have saved... like from information you liked and saved it. I do not know if that bit of info is right or not.

If that is the case using a dummy email is not going to help if someone saved my real address in a clip. (not that I have ever said anything ground shaking that someone would save)

I'm believing that whoever is doing this got our addresses right off of the forums (?) I've gotten probably 8 or 10 of these over the last few days. Only one was supposedly from lesley. I think all had the underscore before the name: _someone@something

I ran an up-dated virus scan specifically for this worm,and I am still clean, so I don't know where this is coming from!!
