Hi,What happens when variable contrst papers are used without filtration? Does vc paper have nominal grade?

Paul, it depends on the spectrum of the light. With my tungsten lamp in enlarger it is equivalent to grade #2-#2.5, slightly depending on tint of film base.

supposly the paper will default to a grade 2 without a filter. However, try printing a shot without a filter then make one with a grade 2 filter, unlikely they will look the same. We run that test in our classes and I have yet to see the same look.

It doesn't make sense printing without a filter. If you have to make any adjustments in contrast you have major exposure recalculations to determine compared to simply switching from a 2 filter to a 2.5 filter.
