Their pretty basic, I remember Northern Hydraulics haveing plans for sale in the past. You need a cylinder with about 24 inches of travel, in the 15,000 pound or higher range, a two way control valve( the cylinder is two way also), the hoses, a frame to mount it on, a tank for the fluid, pressure valve, and the hydraulic pump correctly sized for your application, 5 horse power is enough - small engine can be used with a two stage pump.

Yup--Everything Mitch said-I have the plans for one from Northern Tool around here somewhere, (Northern Hydraulics)-- they changed their name a while back. The plans were very good. IMHO. I had a some extra cash at the time so I just purchased one from them instead. 5 horsepower is plenty with a 2 stage pump. Mine is rated for 20 tons.

Gene, I have plans available at my website (www.how-to-plans.com) for a gas powered splitter. Also plans for a 3pt tractor splitter. These are my own designs. Hope this info helps. Barry
