Postal employee opens fire at postal police

The Associated Press 11/28/01 11:22 PM

NEW YORK (AP) -- A fired postal employee opened fire Wednesday at postal police at a Brooklyn post office, police said.

Jerry Pope, 53, of Queens, went to visit his girlfriend at the Brooklyn Main Post Office in the New Lots section just after 9 p.m., police said.

Pope, an employee of the post office who was suspended three weeks ago, was then escorted from the premises by postal police.

After driving about half a block away, Pope shot about four times at postal police, police spokesman Detective Edward Reuss said.

No injuries were reported.

Postal police chased Pope, who barricaded himself in his car, Reuss said. An Emergency Services Unit later removed Pope from his car.

Charges were pending, Reuss said.
