Southern Double Main Line

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

I'm a beginner at model railroading and am planning on building a beginner's N Scale railroad (1945-1950 era) from one of the beginner's books purchased from the hobby store. It's got double main line trackage. I'd like to model the area around the Raleigh - Winston-Salem area.

I know the Seaboard Airline ran through Raleigh, but what others (if any) might the Southern have met on a double main? Norfolk and Western, etc.?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

John,

In the area of Raleigh to Winston Salem the only double trackes main was the one from Washington to Atlanta passing thruogh Greensboro. The connections made would be the N&W at Winston Salem along with The Winston Salem Southbound. Seaboard and Norfolk Southern(original) at Raleigh. I am not sure of connecting short lines in between. Also most of this track is still in use today.
