A funny kid story

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

My seven-year old daughter, Rachel has just discovered the Bobbsey Twins series. She loves them. Yesterday, I went into the library and got a stack of books for every one including a couple of new ones for her. My husband and I had both had a long tiring day, so quite early-about nine oclock or so, we took our books and went to bed, and read for a while. Then I heard Rachel crying from her room so I went to see what was wrong. She had been "stealth reading" with help from her nightlight and a flashlight, and completely absorbed in her book. The moon had come out for a few minents and was very bright. With all the lights out in the house and the moonlight outside-she thought it was dawn and that she had read all night and that it was now morning and time to get up for school! She was quite relieved to find out she still had the whole night ahead of her!

Kelly that is so funny! I used to to read by flashlight when I was a kid, or I would sit by the window and read by the light from the outside pole light. I just couldn't put those books down! Now I usually fall asleep reading and wake up when the book hits me in the head!

I can sympathize with her. I still remember receiving my first Bobbsey Twins book (Bobbsey Twins in the Country) at Easter when I was about 7. I don't think I put it down till I finished it. That, along with the Little House series, probably planted the first Homesteading seeds in my brain. I have a large collection of both series, my kids read them, and now I am saving them for my granddaughter. Good things never go out of style. I also loved the Elsie Dinsmore books, and have a few originals, one is over 120 yrs. old. They now have an "updated" version of the Elsie books, although I haven't checked them out. Your daughter might enjoy those, too.

Yes, she loves the Little House books and also the "Boxcar Children" she told me she liked books about people who do things for themselves. Sounds like a budding homesteader to me!

Janette Oke writes some wonderful series books that parallel the Little House series but for older readers (young adults and adults alike). I've been reading them for quite some time and have enjoyed them immensely. Sorry - kinda off-topic!
