Schneider Symmar 210 Convertable Lens for 5X7 view: How Does It Work?

I just purchased a 5x7 view camera from a photo.net member. It comes with a Schneider Symmar 210mm "convertable" lens...how does the convertability work? What are the two focal lengths?

Also, any tips or suggestions on using a 5x7 view? I am experienced with 4x5 but want to do serious contact printing in 5x7 (gallery quality) with this unit...paper, film, chemical suggestions appreciated.

I have a Symmar 180mm 315mm convertable lens and with this one you take off the front element which exposes the aperature and shutter to the elements/weather.

Yep, you take the front element off on convertible Symmars. (The back element can be removed on Sironars.) There should be a second scale for the aperture on these lenses, marked in green or yellow, and there should also be a second focal length marking in the same colour.

I put here the answers from Schneider Germany in german and translate then the most important parts so you get it from the producer of thad lens: nur mit der Hinterlinse kommt man auf eine Brennweite von 370 mm und eine Blendenöffnung von 1:12. Der Kameraauszug beträgt bei Unendlich 450 mm und bei 2 Meter 570 mm. Das Objektiv wurde 1967 hergestellt. Solche Systeme werden heute nicht mehr gefertigt. Die aktuellen Systeme sind APO SYMMARE, die nicht mehr als Satzobjektive gerechnet sind. MFG Werner Bayer Kundendienst

das von Ihnen beschriebene Objektiv ist eine Ableitung aus einem sogenannten Satzobjektiv. Das heißt, mit montiertem Vorder- und Hinterglied haben Sie die weiß gravierte Brennweite (210 mm). Entfernen Sie nun, entweder das Vorderglied oder das Hinterglied, verlängert sich die Brennweite auf den grün gravierten Wert. Sie benötigen also keine weitere Linse. Die wahl welches Glied Sie entfernen entscheidet über die Art der entstehenden Verzeichnung, da nun die Blende vor bzw. hinter dem optischen System steht.

My translation of the answer from Schneider Germany: Only with the back element you get a focal lenghts of 370mm and an opening of f12 and you get at infinity 450mm bellows extention and at 2 meters 570mm. Such systems are not anymore build today! The todays APO Symmare are not build and counted as convertable! The second letter also from Schneider but from mister Eilsberger Product manager photo: Wich element you take of, counts for more or less distortion because the diaphragm is in front or behind the opticall system! So thad is in short form what 2 different mans of Schneider stated! Good light!

Todd: I was just discussing this lens with my son. I purchased one new in 1973 for $250.00, and sold it in 1976. The serial number was #12134xxx. It was billed as a 210/360 f:5.6 Symmar. I do not recall what the aperature was for 360, but you removed the front element to make it a 360. The lens I had used a Compur Shutter. This should give you some idea as to the vintage of the lens.
