Hello and happy holidays.Would anyone be able to tell me how many bushels of corn(aprox) a typical gravity box will hold.I can buy corn from a local farmer at market price,I want to fill it and need a ballpark figure so I know how much cash to take along. Thanks much.

Go to http://www.admiralmetals.com/metric_conv.htm .

Page down to the volume section. Select to convert from cubic feet to bushels (you did remember to measure your box, didn't you?).

A bushel equates to 1.5 cubic feet. If I remember correctly, a five- bushel will fill 1 1/2 five gallon buckets.

Take your empty wagon to a scales, weigh it, fill it, back to scales, weigh it. You will know what the corn weighs and then you can figure out the number of bushels by dividing by difference by weight of bushel of corn, I think 60#. Great way to do it, you get a weight slip so everybody knows for sure and not guessing.

ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT EAR CORN OR SHELLED CORN, THERE IS BIG DIFFERANCE

Gravity boxes (hopper wagons) come in many sizes 75bu. to 500bu.+ As stated above best to weigh your load. To find bu.in a area cu.ft.x .8=bu. (small grains) ear corn cu.ft.x .4= bu. water cu.ft.x 7.5 = gal. shelled corn weighs aprox. 6# to the gal. 5 gal. bucket 28-30# buzz

Your basic box anywhere from 200-350 bu. That's the sizes most smaller farmers use. Be aware you want to have the right size running gear under the box if you change things. You can add tonnage fast by putting up additional side boards.
