Stephen King has a book on tape titled "On Writing" about the craft and a retrospective on his life and influences. To put it unfairly simply, King began as a journalist apprentice and diligently submitted pulp stories then finally his novel Carrie. Poe had a more literary bent in his education in England and West Point. His stories too were submitted to magazines along with poetry and articles. His one novel was a bomb. His poetry, invention of the detective story and literary criticism put him on a whole different level and his stories seem to possess a poetry and symbolic depth also of an order higher than the skillful Mr. King.

So it is mostly apples and oranges except for the horror connection, the brush with alcoholism, their fame and controversy for having that fame in the field of pulp horror.

Well there's also another comparison between mr.King and Poe I'm actualy sad to say I noticed it. In the Raven there is a mention of Gilead which is a reference to the Bible. In the Steven King novel the Dark Tower Roland the gunslinger is from a land called Gilead.
