(13:40) Hamas protests continue despite PA ban

Hamas supporters called for more suicide attacks against Israel during a funeral procession in the Gaza Strip today.

Some 1,000 supporters gathered despite a ban by the Palestinian Authority on public meetings by militant groups, Israel Radio reported.

"Forward with martyrdom attacks!" the crowd chanted at the funeral of a Hamas gunman killed by Israeli soldiers yesterday after he shot dead an Israeli motorist in Gaza.

Prof. Baruch Singer, a scientist from the Nahal Sorek nuclear research site, was shot and killed by two Palestinian terrorists dressed in IDF fatigues as he drove between Elei Sinai and Nisanit in the northern Gaza Strip.

"Izzadin Kassam has sentenced the criminal [Israeli Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon to death," people in the crowd shouted.

The group is the military wing of the Hamas.

Gunmen fired in the air as others kneeled, praying in gratitude for the attacks.

Palestinian police did not intervene, media reports said.

Protesters called on the PA to immediately release Hamas and Islamic Jihad activists rounded up overnight.

Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was placed under house arrest in Gaza, according to Palestinian sources.

"Greeting to all the mujahadeen [Islamic fighters] who paid a price for their sacrifices for the sake of God," the group shouted outside a Gaza prison.
