Goner Worm (12-5)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Current News - Homefront Preparations : One Thread

The Goner worm has just hit where I used to work, in the Defense Logistics Agency. The Help Desk got the word out as quick as they could, but it's done some damage. Screw, this has affected a good friend.

There are certain advantages to using Netscape and other non-MS software! With all the layoffs of software developers and engineers, it's not surprising that little or nothing has been done to lock the trapdoors in MS software.

Ever since the first bad virus got loose, MS software or not, I do not open attachments any more without first checking with the sender. I don't open mail from names I don't know, either. But these viruses are getting better and won't need to be opened at all before too long.

Goner hit yesterday where I work. It was stopped quickly, but the damage had been done to at least two machines. The e-mail system was flooded with it trying to send itself to the 10000 or so e-mail addresses we maintain.

The bad thing about this worm is that you don't even have to open it to spread it. If you had the "preview" allowed on your new incoming e-mails, that was enough. We have since issued a request to turn off the "preview" function.

So this one is beyond the opening stage. Damn!

I thought badtrans was the virus that muscled in through Preview.

I believe that the Goner worm is an attachment that has to be opened to be invasive. That was the information that I received on it. It amazes me that people will open these things.
