FD lens aperture

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon FD : One Thread

I recently got a used FD 24/2.8. When I check it later at home, I found that the aperture remained at f/22 even though I set the aperture between f/2.8 to f/22. But when I set to 'A', the aperture remained at about f/5.6. Is it the mechanism of FD lens or is it something wrong in the lens? It is my first FD lens and have not yet got a manual Canon camera. Please advise.

When an FD lens is not mounted to a camera, the aperture will be around f:5.6. This is normal. It needs to be mounted with the shutter engaged or the stop down lever on the camera engaged for the lens to stop down.
