Question about feeding eggs to pigs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

This is probably a very silly question, but, it has been bothering me. I'm experiencing a large surplus of eggs and we'll be getting a few pigs when hubby FINALLY finishes the pig stall in the barn. I'd like to feed them eggs but do you have to crack the eggs, or just throw them in a feeder? Egg shells are rather sharp will the shards cut the pig?

Thank you in advance for not laughing.....

We just throw ours in Stacy, they don't seem to have any problems with them.

Stacy, I like to scramble up a big pot of the older eggs with some older goat's milk and they really slurp it down. I never even considered just giving them whole. See, learn something new every day!!!

Stacy - just toss them an egg, and they will devour it! When we cook eggs for the family, we save the shells for the pigs, and they eat them as well. They love 'em! The shells will most definitely NOT hurt the pigs. Nothing to worry about there.

Have fun with your piggies! They have amazing personalities!

I used to put my starter pigs in the old chicken coop until they were old enough to stay warm in the pen. Some chickens still layed eggs in the nest boxes so I was surprised when I didn't find any eggs until I saw one of the babies climb up to eat the eggs. I gave them the cracked eggs, shell and all. They loved it.

One caveat, from personal experience:

If you are giving your pigs a large volume of eggs for a long period of time, cook them first. There is an amino acid in raw eggs which binds with the B vitamins, and prevents its absorption. In my ignorance I had a hog go lame when I fed him raw eggs for several weeks.

Thanks everyone for the help, I appreciate that no one openly laughed at me. If my DH ever gets the stall done I'll know enough to 1) not feed too many raw eggs, and 2) I won't have to shell them when I do feed them raw.

Thanks again,

Our pigs love eggs. They also love freshly cut stinging nettles, cut from places they will never go. We dump them in by the wheel barrow load. They think they are great.
