Fur Elise discrepancy

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Everything About Teaching and Learning the Piano : One Thread

There is a discrepancy among editions of Fur Elise. The note in question is in the 7th full measure, the second half of the second beat. Is it a D or an E??? Most, but not all, have it an E, including an old Schirmer copy I have. In the only recording I have, it's a D. Does anyone know which is right?? This has bothered me for some time, but I haven't been able to find out. I'm never sure how to teach it. Thanks.

Hello. I just read your question, and hope my answer helps. Here is what "Alfred's Basic Piano Library (Level 6) said in regard to your question: "In most modern editions, this note appears as a D instead of an E (here and in subsequent similar passages). In the original edition and in the only known Beethoven autograph sketch, the note appears as an E throughout the composition."
