It's the National Hangover Day!

December 10, 2001 9:42 am EST

LONDON (Reuters) - In Outer Mongolia, the best cure for a hangover is to eat a pickled sheep's eye in a glass of tomato juice.

Or you can do it the Puerto Rican way -- rub lemon under your arms.

But Britain has opted for a more traditional cure -- the hangover remedy maker Alka-Seltzer said on Friday it would celebrate its 70th anniversary by declaring January 1 to be National Hangover Day.

Bleary-eyed revelers should "reach for the fizz" -- and they don't mean champagne -- as the best New Year's Day remedy.

An Alker-Seltzer statement gave drinkers more handy tips:

-- Pace yourself

-- Women should not try to "Keep Up with the Boys"

-- Eat before and during alcoholic consumption

-- Drink plenty of water before you go to bed

And, failing that, the Puerto Rican and Outer Mongolian solutions apparently work wonders.

Hell, in my day, the boys were trying to keep up with me, lol! It was quite funny to drink seasoned sailors under the table and be able to walk and talk with no problem. Secret: several hard-boiled eggs before going out, lololol! They alkalyze the oxydol, ya see. Snort!

Details, OG. How many is "several"?

A trick I learned in college was to drink a glass of water between drinks. It helps you pace yourself, keeps you hydrated and it keeps a drink in your hand at all times.

For hangovers: a hot beef sandwich. Roast beef on bread, smothered with mashed potatoes and gravy. And a slurpie.
