Texas law enforcement officials say threat against a school has been deemed not credible

By Associated Press, 12/14/2001 14:23

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A vague terrorist threat against an unnamed Texas school has been deemed not credible by the FBI, the state Department of Public Safety said Friday.

''At this time, there is no information to suggest that a threat to a Texas school exists,'' said Tela Mange, a department spokeswoman.

The threat warning was withdrawn Friday morning and Texas law enforcement officials stressed that Texas schools are safe, Mange said.

The FBI did not immediately return telephone calls to The Associated Press Friday morning.

State officials and the FBI on Wednesday alerted schools throughout Texas to a threat that suggested two people might retaliate against an unknown Texas school for the U.S. bombing in Afghanistan.

No specific school was named. The FBI said the information of the threat had come from a foreign government working with U.S. authorities.

Officials reported a quiet day on school campuses Thursday and said there were no reports of large numbers of students staying home.
