Jonsared Chainsaws

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I listed this under Farm Equip. Can anyone think of a better category?

Will a top of the line Jonsared be worth the money (I think 500 dollars.)

We are going to need to cut a lot of trees, none bigger than 16 inces I guess. Some we will cut by hand, many by chainsaw. We need to clear a 1500 foot road and a homesite, including garden. We also need logends for cordwood, and burning.

Thank you.

I've been using Jonsereds chainsaws for almost 30 years, and have ppurchased 2 of them new, and found a third one in the dump that had been apparently run without oil for a while. My son disassembled it and cleaned it up and we've been using it for a year now with good luck. I still have the first one I bought new in 1977, and also a second one we bough 3 or 4 years ago. I would recomend them as a quality tool, but make sure you are getting it from a dealer who will service it and provide parts if needed. I think that Husquarvarna and Stihl also are good saws. I avoid saws sold at discount stores because of parts and service problems. We use our saws to cut firewood, which provides all of our heat (in northwestern Wis) that isn't provided by passive solar. I am not up to date on current saw models etc so can't comment on the model to get.

Thanks Jim.

I used a Stihl in 1977-1981, and sold it when we moved back to the city. Never had a problem. As of late I have heard of one that needed service within a year, and the parts were expensive.

i agree with Jim, service and the availability of parts from your dealer is critical. I believe most "brand name" saws are all quality saws and will do the job for you. I personally run husqavarnas because of availability of parts locally. If I'm not mistaken, Jonsared are made by the same mother company "Electrolux". (yea yea,I hear all you stihll people saying "company that makes things that suck" ie vacumns lol. I would also say that all you would really need is a saw of about 50cc or so, plenty of power to cut any trees you are talking about. I guess I'm saying you don't have to buy the biggest & best, put the rest of that money towards safety gear, ie pants etc,.. good luck & happy cutting.

I've had several pieces of Jonsered equipment and highly recommend the purchase of any "high-end" model of their chainsaws. The "low-end" models of Jonesred, Huskavarna (sp?), and Stihl are made in the US and are not as good as the early models which were made in Sweden (Husky and Jonserud) or in Germany (Stihl). These companies built there reputation on quality....but had to cheapen their products to compete with other brands selling in the USA. Consequently, the low-end models of saws from these companies are poorer quality compared to what they were a couple of decades ago. The high-end models are still made in Europe and still are very good quality. --Happy trails, Cabin Fever

Rick, I just posted a response to a similar question from Gareth, UK ("Huskvarna 266 Chainsaw").

If you are interested in general opinions about chainsaws and the best source of chainsaw info I know, Check out that reply. (I'd just repeat myself, but it was really LONG!)

We use 3 Stihl saws here, an 038AV super and 039 and a little one but I forget the number (we just got it) Never used a Jonsared but my sister in law's father works winters in the bush cutting firewood and sawlogs. He'll only use Jonsared!

Rick, It is my opinion that there is no finer saw made. I have owned and used Partner,Huskavarna,Sthil,Polan,Homelite and Echo.I bought my first Jonsered in 1990. I ran that saw over with a logcart 2 months later, straightened the handle at it is still cutting like new today. The model was a 610 has an 18 inch bar will handle more length if needed. This year I bought a 7122 this is a large saw. It has outperformed my expectations. I do horselogging and cut 99% hardwood oaks, maples, etc. This saw is awesome. I run 3/8ths Carlton chain. I work pretty much alone (just someone around while felling) I can usually cut and skid 2000 feet a day in 8 hrs and that includes harnessing the horses. I don't cut trees less than 16 inch chest high. In good timber, with another man skidding I can easily cut 5000 ft per day...I tire long before the saw does. These saws are good on gas, require very little maintainence, and are very dependable. They are WELL worth the money. I would however caution you to select a saw from a dealer near you BUT Jonsered has their own website, and as mentioned are very dependable. I don't ever want another brand. When my first old saw finally dies... I'll probably bury it next to a family pet. It owes me nothing and has been a great friend! Ralph
