Bad Bank Robbery Note Baffles Teller, Thwarts Heist

A V O N L A K E, Ohio — An easily befuddled robber left two banks empty-handed last Friday when the teller asked which account he wanted the money from, police say.

The confounded criminal — a male in his 20s who is still at large — walked into the Lorain National Bank and handed the teller a note that simply read "$1,000."

"She asked him if he wanted the money from his checking or savings account," said Sgt. Jack Hall of the Avon Lake police. "He looked at her and said, 'What?'"

Webb said that after a moment's pause the robber told the teller, "No, I think you know what I mean."

But the confusion apparently agitated the man, who then ran out empty-handed.

A few minutes later, he tried his luck again at the FirstMerit Bank less than a mile away.

"He gave the teller the same note," Hall said, but this time the teller stepped away and told security. The robber — who didn't brandish a weapon or make any threats — ran out and drove off in a beat-up Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable.

"He doesn't sound like the sharpest knife in the drawer," Lt. Mike Bulger remarked to the Morning Journal in Lorain, Ohio. "But you know, 'tis the season. He didn't have money, so he went to rob a bank."

SAR, I wrote a comment once that some of the dumbest and slimest criminals usually passed through Cleveland at some point. I'm just happy that he wasn't pulling that stuff on the local banks on High St. in Columbus.
