Pig Husbandry (How to AI a Gilt?)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I'm looking for information on how to artificially inseminate a 9 month old gilt. With just one pig I can't justify buying a boar and pigs are scarce in this area. I would appreciate any info or tricks of the trade:-) Also any info on where to buy supplies would be appreciated. Thanks.....Tom

I was in the same boat about five years ago. You should go to showpig.com or thepigpage.com to see some semen sellers. You can buy terminal semen for under $10 per dose. You need two doses to inseminate her. The trick is in knowing when she is in heat. Every 21 days or so, the vulva will swell and she will go into a standing heat when you press on her back. The semen company catalogs give good advice. There is also a video you can buy. The semen companies sell the rods. You might want a bottle of SOA boar spray to help know when she is in standing heat. Good luck.

Are there any pig sales around your area. I can buy a boar one week and sell him back when finished. Your lose in time, feed and sale barn fees are the only thing your out. Providing pig prices are the same. Where did you get you pig? Would it be possible to take her to a boar? Jim

Showpig.com is a great place to find semen and info. Another site we use a lot is perdue univ. They have great pork pages and are very helpful with pictures and all. If you want step by step instructions, let me know and we can help.
