well water shocking

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I'm new to wells and pumps. My well tested positive for coloform bacteria so I was told (by the county) I should pour a gallon of clorine bleach in it to shock it .... but I'm not sure how. The drilled well is capped with a pump (made by Harvard) that has four bolts and a small hole showing on the top. Should I pour the bleach into that hole or does it go to the pump motor? .... If not, do I have to take the whole contraption off the well in order to pour the bleach in?

You should probably take it off. I wouldn't pour it directly onto the motor. But ours is a submersible pump. When we had to add bleach to ours, we just removed the cap on the well and poured the bleach in. Pump is in the bottom of the well not on top like it sounds like yours is.
